What is Freshwater Fish?
Freshwater Fish is the centralized marketing body that buys, processes and markets all fish caught on a commercial licence in Manitoba, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories. We operate packing stations both directly and with agents throughout the regions and run a processing plant in Winnipeg.  We do not issue fishing licences, set quotas or regulate opening and closing dates for the fishing season.

How old is Freshwater Fish?
Freshwater Fish opened in 1969.

Why does Freshwater Fish exist?
The Freshwater Fish Marketing Act was put in place to give our region's many small fishing communities the marketing strength of a larger organization. In working with Freshwater Fish and together, fishers can now access more markets around the world and receive top-dollar for their catch.

Where is Freshwater Fish?
Freshwater’s head office and main plant are in Winnipeg, Manitoba with packing facilities spread across the region.

How many fishers does Freshwater Fish work with? Are they employees?
Approximately 1,700 commercial fishers work with Freshwater Fish and are independent business people.

How much money does the freshwater fishery make for Canada?
Freshwater Fish has returned more than $1 billion to commercial fishers since it began in 1969 and has generated another $0.7 billion through the operation of its plant and collection facilities.

Do my tax dollars support Freshwater Fish?
No. Freshwater Fish is supported entirely by the sale of fish products.

What types of fish does Freshwater Fish buy?
Our four main species are pickerel (walleye), lake whitefish, northern pike and mullet. We also buy and market lake trout, yellow perch, carp, sauger, tullibee, inconnu and white bass.
